Having Pontin Holidays

We all need to get away from time to time and on certain occasions we seriously need to pamper ourselves. Pontin holidays were a way in which many people really enjoyed themselves. They were able to pamper themselves to the heights of greed and near subversion and sometimes still do! Pontins is a company that was formed in the mid 1940’s by a man named Fred Pontin. The company specialised in “pontin holidays” – half board and self catering holidays that contained regular bouts of entertainment. The customer would typically be housed in a chalet. Pontin holidays were the be all and end all of the wealthy. The company, however, went from a mega star to a has been one hit wonder.

The company operated very successfully for many years until in 1978 when Fred Pontins sold the company to Coral. Fred Pontins remained on the board. In 1980 the company was taken over by Bass. Soon after Bass got rid of the high-end fop and the Pontins company became nothing more than a usual destination seeker – no better then a timeshare. Since the takeover in 1980 the company has since been bought and sold a number of times.

At one time Pontin’s held equity and controlling share in many resorts (what they would refer to as centers) but over the last decade they liquidated many of these places  and in 2000 they only held eight centers – a far cry from the dozens they once held. They at least modernised the ones they did own and then the company sold back to Trevor Hemmings who had purchased it in 1987. Recently the company was released yet again – this time to Ocean Parcs – another resort destination luminary.

You may still have your fill of the Pontin experience – on a very small scale and only in Britain. The renovations to the sites they own has been completed and are all quite nice.
